Each year we open submissions for our Annual Wise Therapy Spotlight to explore questions of vital importance to our therapist community. We are consistently moved by the depth and generosity of these unedited community voices.
For this 6th edition, we asked: How do we remain faithfully human in an increasingly automated world? Read more about our inspiration in the letter from the editors and Academy of Therapy Wisdom co-founders, Brian Spielmann and Ian McPherson.

Therapy Wisdom Spotlight: Karen D. Wood L.C.S.W.
As a Neurotherapist, I employ collage art to help clients explore the intricate balance between the brain, body, behavior, and belief. The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) in mental health and therapy has raised important questions, depicted in my work through both positive and negative symbols. AI-generated lists of benefits and potential detriments, as well as phrases sourced from various videos and articles, inform this ongoing dialogue.
Visual Representation of AI and Human Connection
The collage features a bold, computer-generated “A,” symbolizing the powerful connection that AI can foster (with stripes from a printing technology glitch). A human figure is shown draped over a Red Cross rescue plus sign, emphasizing the sometimes desperate reach for connection, standing on tiptoes [to illustrate longing and hope – AI added]. “24/7, 365 days a year” highlights the constant accessibility that AI provides, while lists of concerns underscore the complexity of this technological advancement.
Contrast Between AI and Human Experience
Opposing the computer-generated elements, the letter “I” is rendered in gentle watercolor, representing the softer, distinctly human response found in art. This contrast emphasizes the potential loss of human connection within AI-driven modalities, as depicted by figures separating—one moving toward AI, the other feeling displaced by technology.
Symbolism in the Composition
A computer algorithm appears in the upper left corner as a sparkling, expanding storm, [alluding to the rapid growth and unpredictable nature of AI – AI added – it knows!]. In stark contrast, the brain and vagus nerve system are positioned on the far right, underscoring the central challenge: integrating technology with genuine human interaction to enable healing from trauma and to support well-being in a human-centered world. This tension is encapsulated by central phrases: “It saved me” and “She saved me.”
