Understanding Dissociation:

With Jamie Marich, Ph.D.

Hello,

If you’re like most therapists, you don’t know much about dissociation…

In fact, you might even be a bit afraid of it.

Or you have flashbacks from Sybil and think your client with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is going to flip into an out-of-control persona during a session.

You might think there’s a special modality that helps clients who dissociate, but you don’t know which one it is.

Well, it’s not your fault if you feel confused or ill-prepared. You didn’t learn the facts about dissociative identities in graduate school, and the popular parts methods often fall short working with DID.

“Therapists are always saying ‘Tell me what to do’,” Dr. Jamie Marich reports. “They think DID can be simply addressed with a model – a set of rules. But there is no one model.”

In Understanding Dissociation: An Insider’s View on Helping Dissociative Clients, Dr. Jamie will show you the steps to demystify dissociative identities.

Jamie is one of the few trainers on dissociation who is candid about their own lived experience with a dissociative disorder. She/they will speak to you from her insider perspective as a person with dissociative identities AND teach you proven tools she uses as an expert therapist who works with dissociative clients.

Here is what you will learn in this on-demand course:

Module 1: Demystifying Dissociation: Reconceptualizing the Fundamentals

Module 2: The Dissociative Profile: Implications for Grounding, Stabilization & Preparation

Module 3: Working with Parts: How to Navigate Aspects of Experience When No Perfect Model Exists

Module 4: Treatment Solutions: Beyond Method and One Size Fits All Approaches

Module 5 : Eliminating Stigma and Discrimination About Dissociation: The Role of Human Services Professional as Advocate

This isn’t just about changing your practice. It’s about changing lives – including your own.

Every module brings you one step closer to becoming the therapist you aspire to be. The one who empowers, heals, and advocates. The one who understands that dissociation is a lived experience, and can help clients navigate it skillfully.

The one who helps dissociative clients not just survive, but thrive.

Warmly,
Academy of Therapy Wisdom
Jamie Marich, Ph.D.

In this interview, Dr. Jamie Marich “picks the brain” of fellow trauma expert and neuroscience specialist Jules Taylor Shore. Jamie, who is admittedly more of an artist than a scientist in her approach to trauma and dissociation, talks with Jules about:

  • What is going on in the human brain when we dissociate
  • The various neurological functions at play with trauma and dissociation
  • The idea that no two human brains are alike, especially with regard to the phenomenon of dissociation
  • Making neuroscience research and applications practical to the clinician
  • The importance of listening to your clients and believing them

Releasing Fears of Working with Dissociation in a Clinical Setting: A Conversation with Dr. Curt Rouanzoin

What Previous Participants
Say About Learning from Jamie

“Dr. Marich left our audience with a number of great tools and skills, and things to think about.”

Dr. Jamie Marich was the keynote for our…conference. Her enthusiasm and passionate approach was perfect and really set the tone for the rest of the weekend. She has just the right combination of humor, inspiring insights, and compelling motivation.

– Jaime Pollack, M.Ed., Founder and Director, An Infinite Mind

“Dr. Jamie’s… [training] is nothing shy of AMAZING!”

As the founder of the only Therapists of Color Collaborative in the State of Colorado, being trained by someone who could help digest what is a very scripted protocol, and make it more culturally relevant was imperative. She did so with ease, patience, and a bang up team of EMDR trainers!

– Rossina Schroeer-Santiago, MA, LPC, NCC, Denver, CO

“Dr. Marich’s teachings on dissociation are what clinicians and dissociative clients have been needing.”

The compassionate, client-centered approaches Dr. Marich teaches are the definition of trauma-informed. We’re obliged to “do no harm” but many therapists are inadvertently doing harm due to misinformation surrounding dissociation. All therapists should be required to complete training like Dr. Marich’s as all therapists work with trauma and, likewise, all therapists work with dissociation.

– Sam Bergstein, MA, MSW, LISW-S, REAT, Columbus, OH

“[She] utilizes both her lived experience and evidence-based practices to normalize dissociation and demystify it”

Dr. Jamie’s approach to teaching dissociation asks the learner to be curious and embrace their own experiences of dissociation. This allows the learner to gain understanding of the experience that for many professionals is challenging and disordered. As she states in a chapter title of her latest book, Dissociation Made Simple

– H LS Scarboro, LPCC, Fayetteville, NC

“She’s legendary on TikTok… She engages, attunes, enables, captivates.”

With her audiences, of whatever kind whether live or recorded… Jamie dances, with her professional expertise, her joy with her work, her rich personal experience and her listeners. Time stands still when Jamie speaks, and when she’s done – always disappointingly, as one could listen forever – she leaves a glow of wisdom and enthusiasm to take her ideas into one’s own practice and life.

– Mark Brayne, Sheringham, UK

“If you truly want to understand, from a first-person perspective, this is time well spent.”

Dr. Jamie Marich offers scholarly information, years of sound practice and, more importantly, her own lived experience as someone with dissociative experiences. Executed with a passion and heartfelt desire to help others experience, not just learn, what dissociation is and what our lives can look like, Dr. Jamie exemplifies #nothingaboutuswithoutus.

– Michelle Kahl, LPC, Know, PA

Frequently asked

questions

Q: I was told I have to learn a special method to work with Dissociative Identity Disorder. Will this course teach me that method?

Not exactly. Because there isn’t one. We understand the desire for a clear roadmap in every situation, but human experience doesn’t work that way. Jamie Marich emphasizes the importance of methods, tools, skills, and exercises that can be adapted to different settings, situations, people, and types of dissociation, alongside your existing modalities. The course teaches you to co-create treatment plans that align with your client’s individual goals. Now, doesn’t that sound even better?

Working with DID clients is not as complicated as most therapists make it out to be. Jamie will show you how “normal” people with DID can be, how to have conversations about dissociative experiences, and exercises for grounding if they are dissociating. You’ll also learn about how the clinical setting – with its primary relationships and education-like context – recreate the two biggest environments where original traumas occur and how to modify your ambiance to avoid triggers.

Misinformation often breeds fear. Accurate information breeds empowerment and success. When you take this course, you’ll join Jamie in her mission to smash the stigma about dissociation in the mental health field and society at large.

If what you are already doing is working well for you and your clients, you may not need this course. But if navigating dissociation still leaves you perplexed or is not meeting your client’s goals, this course will provide valuable insights into dissociation that can help you understand it better. You’ll learn about all forms of dissociation, but more importantly, you’ll learn skills to understand your client’s unique dissociative responses and develop interventions that work for them.

There are many expert opinions on how to work with dissociative clients. But few of them have personal experience with a dissociative identity. Some experts even say that people who dissociate are “faking.” People with DID can be plagued by deep suffering and distress that can impair daily living, especially when triggered, invalidated, or negated. Jamie wants therapists to know that people with DID are extremely “high-functioning,” creative, intelligent, and capable. She believes people with DID make the best “experts.”

This on-demand course is entirely pre-recorded so you can absorb the material at your own pace, and learn and practice the exercises and skills.
