We’re sharing from Frank Anderson’s introduction to Spiritual Therapy Techniques: Intuition in Clinical Practice, part of his new Therapy Wisdom trauma therapy course now available on-demand here.
Frank shares…
In my second book, “Transcending Trauma,” there is a favorite quote of mine. I say it’s a favorite quote of mine because I kind of feel like it isn’t even my quote. It’s a quote that came to me when I was writing that book.
“Trauma blocks love, love heals trauma.” – Frank Anderson
During the pandemic, I would write after going for a run, and then I’d just hear these messages; I’d hear stuff come to me. It was the way I wrote this book, interestingly enough. “Trauma blocks love, love heals trauma,” kept coming up over and over again.
As you’ll get to know me over the course of our time together [in Spiritual Therapy Techniques: Intuition in Clinical Practice], I am not only a trauma expert, but I am also someone with a trauma history. How can you become a trauma expert if you don’t have a trauma history? Personally, I don’t even really understand that, but whatever. This is not about other people. This is about me.
I am someone with a trauma history. When this quote kept showing up for me – “Trauma blocks love, trauma blocks connection” – it resonated so truthfully within my system. And in fact, as I’ve learned around healing, it is love and connection that heals trauma.
Trauma, Connection, Love, and Healing
So it’s the cyclical pattern: trauma blocks love and connection, and love and connection is what, in fact, heals trauma. [In the course] we’re going to be breaking this apart and talking about the different dimensions of this, how we help trauma survivors access love and connection, what the dimensions of love and connection are, and how we utilize the loving connection that is inherent in all of us – even the most broken people – to be able to heal trauma.
Because if you saw me way back in the day when I was at the trauma center with Bessel Van Der Kolk at Harvard Medical School, yes, beard, very different glasses than I have now. I looked like a different person. And I was a different person. And it was because I had so much trauma blocking who I was authentically, right?
The more healing I’ve done over my journey, over my lifetime, the more I become my authentic self. So that’s what we’re talking about here. And that’s what we’re really going to be able to try to help each one of you look at for yourself and look at for your clients or whoever you’re working with.
Trauma Therapy Training Step 1: Work on Your Own Trauma First
This is something that I feel is really important. In order for you to be able to work with someone who has trauma in their lives, you have to work on your own. This is not just about the caretaking parts of you who want to help people heal, because you need to clear the blocks within yourself in order to be fully open and accessible to be able to help somebody else heal. Because let me tell you, trauma survivors are super sensitive. They have vigilant parts that can sniff out any of the places within us that are not fully open and available.
So that’s what we’re going to be looking at [in the course]. That’s what we’re going to be working on.
