On September 15, 2022, the World Professional Association for Transgender Health published the 8th version of its Standards of Care.
These standards, assembled by an international and multidisciplinary team of experts using the latest evidenced-based research, define our minimum responsibilities as therapists when it comes to providing care for gender diverse clients.
Therapists working with gender-diverse clients often don’t know these standards exist. Or that the APA practice guidelines and DSM diagnostic codes are changing as well. That can leave us providing substandard care to one of the most vulnerable populations.

APA TGNC Guidelines
Guidelines are not Standards of Care, but they are best practices that can help build your competency. Learn how the American Psychological Association guidelines for Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming (TGNC) people are changing — including getting rid of the term non-conforming — to reflect the rapid growth of knowledge in the area of gender diversity. The new guidelines are more affirming and focus on:
- Intersectionality and minority stress so you can see the complexity of multiple identities and sources of oppression
- Non-binary identities to help you step away from a binary gender system of thinking

Meet Your Presenter
Sarah Burgamy, Psy.D.
Sarah Burgamy, Psy.D., specializes in identity development, sexual minority competency, and transgender and gender diversity issues with adults, adolescents, and children.
She has a degree from the University of Denver, Graduate School of Professional Psychology, in Clinical Psychology, with an emphasis on child and adolescent development. She was an adjunct assistant professor at DU focused on arenas of development and culture, LGBTIQQ+ cultural competency, and cross cultural analysis.
Sarah has trained in the professional, educational, healthcare, and public sectors. She has served on the American Psychological Association (APA) Council of Representatives, the APA Committee on Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity, the Colorado Psychological Association, on the Board of Directors for organizations serving youth. Dr. Burgamy currently serves on the Advisory Committee for the Leadership Institute for Women in Psychology at APA.
Sarah has a private practice, PhoenixRISE, in Denver, Colorado.
