Here´s a look at the Janina Fisher Lifetime Achievement Award acceptance speech (transcript):
You know, when Zach [Taylor] first told me I was getting this award, I thought, lifetime. That means you’re old. Which is true. And then I thought, but achievement? What achievement? Because none of us set out to achieve. I’ve been on a mission. A mission since the early 90s to really bring the message of what is trauma? How do we understand it? How do we treat it to as many therapists as we could reach in any corner of the world?
And so it never felt like achieving. It was like, can we reach people? And you know, for every one of you that has ever listened to me and the other leaders in this field, 10, 20, 100 clients have been helped. And so it’s such tremendous, it feels like a privilege, not an achievement.
I am so, so grateful for the people who are on this mission with me, like Bessel, like Pat, like Frank, like Lisa. Frank and I started on this mission together in 1995. So, you know, the time flies when you’re doing good things.
And I’m very excited about this new generation of therapists… because I’m not getting any younger. We need you guys. We need somebody to be as passionate as we were.
I mean, we were partly passionate because there were so many doubters, so many people who said, oh, sexual abuse of children, that just leads to neurosis. And so we felt impassioned by this incredible need for people to actually get that trauma is traumatic. I hope that you all will find the passion.
Maybe it’ll be the passion to treat trauma in spite of insurance companies, in spite of all of the sort of medicalization of what we do. Whatever it is, please, please be the next generation because we need you.
(APPLAUSE)
