Can deliberate practice be used to hone the skills (or ways of being) needed to effectively develop multicultural awareness and skill? Dr. Jesse Owen, developer of the “Multicultural Orientation” Framework (MCO), and Dr. Karen Tao have clearly demonstrated in their research the power of deliberate practice when used to enhance a therapist’s ability to develop skills such as cultural humility and cultural comfort–skills which make a difference to outcomes. In this interview, an overview of MCO will stand side by side with chances to practice using video-tape roleplays.

Dr. Karen Tao is an Associate Professor in the Counseling and Counseling Psychology in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Utah. She also directs the Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) master’s program. Karen’s clinical and research interests are guided by an overarching goal to reduce disparities in the access, service, and quality of mental health and education for historically marginalized groups. Karen conducts research in counseling and school settings, utilizing qualitative and quantitative methods to identify cultural factors related to client improvement and student academic persistence.

Dr. Jesse Owen is a licensed psychologist and Professor in the Department of Counseling Psychology, Morgridge College of Education at the University of Denver. Dr. Owen leads the Relationship and Psychotherapy Lab (RAP Lab) at the University of Denver and his research seeks to understand couples’ relationship functioning, Multicultural Orientation (MCO), and psychotherapy processes and outcomes.

Tori Olds, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Austin, Texas. She is the training director and part-owner of Deep Eddy Psychotherapy, a training and counseling center that houses 120 clinicians. She specializes in the integration of experiential approaches to therapy and teaches four weekly training groups on this topic. She also offers online video-based trainings that offer CEU’s. Tori is passionate about breaking down complex psychological theories to make them accessible to the public, which she does through her Youtube channel as well as speaking engagements.
