Ruth Cohn, MFT
Hello
Ruth Cohn is on a mission to make the world neglect-informed.
Too often in her practice, she hears clients reflect on their childhoods and say they can’t remember much. No significant memories. No trauma.
Basically, “Nothing happened.”
And that’s when Ruth’s ears perk up.
Ruth has been working with trauma and neglect survivors, their intimate partners, and their families since 1988.
Often, the absence of trauma is mistaken for well-being.
But nothing is further from the truth.
When one’s attachment needs are not met, many developmental tasks go missing and show up as problems in adult life.
Ruth knows how to recognize the signs of neglect and what to do next.
In The Hidden Trauma of Neglect: Healing Unmet Attachment Needs Ruth will take you on a journey into the damage caused by childhood neglect and how to heal it decades later.
We are so grateful the world has become more trauma-informed in arenas such as mental health, medical care, education, and media.
Now it’s time that neglect is understood in the same way.
Neglect is a serious trauma with little awareness of its frequency and impact. It’s contributing to a world of lonely and disconnected people.
- And you can help change that.
- Join us in creating a world that is neglect-informed.
In this course, you’ll learn:
- How neglect affects the primitive part of the developing brain so you understand its impact on identity and relationships
- The way neglect gets logged in the body and emotional experience so you understand it somatically
- How to recognize neglect so you’ll know when it is the source of your client’s current problems and how to intervene appropriately
- How to help clients reconstruct their story so they can create the context of their lives and grow into their full selves
From Invisible to Visible
In the first module, you’ll learn about the impact of childhood neglect on the developing brain. We all know attachment is crucial to regulation and development; here you’ll understand why it is a survival need as well.
You’ll learn:
- Why attachment that is lost or insufficient results in overwhelm and trauma.
- How to recognize what didn’t happen.
- How to start excavating their story — the narrative around neglect — so you can help them build the history and source of their current problems.
- Strategies to implement the primary therapeutic intervention: helping your client feel seen and recognized.
Attachment Theory as a Backdrop for Psychotherapy for Childhood Neglect
In module 2, you’ll cover the basics of attachment theory and their relevance to psychotherapy for childhood neglect.
You’ll learn:
- The Avoidant Attachment Style so you can recognize it in clients with childhood neglect.
- How what was supposed to happen (but didn’t) impacts your client’s current interpersonal world.
- Skills for working with particularly challenging clients and how to navigate them with attention.
Psychotherapy Techniques for Healing: Limitations of “The Talking Cure”
Module 3 explores how to develop the client’s childhood narrative when memories and talk therapy aren’t enough.
You’ll learn:
- Multiple access routes to narrative — working with emotional intelligence and fluency — so you can work with the communication elements that are present or lacking in your clients.
- Non-verbal techniques to access sensory, emotional and somatic memory, so you can work with whatever sources your clients can access.
Greatest Challenges: Ambiguities and “Contradictions”
Ruth explores the very mixed feelings neglected clients have about their parents.
You’ll learn:
- The challenges or conflicts clients may feel about their own grief, anger, loss, or terror about what they did not get as a child.
- Tools for navigating ambivalence or rejection of therapy so you can protect clients who feel threatened from ending therapy prematurely.
- Self-care, self-compassion, and patience for you and your clients
- Strategies for preventing the relapse of presenting problems.
Essentials for Therapists Working with Childhood Neglect
Burnout is no joke. In the final module, Ruth will provide you with:
- Tools and strategies for excavating your own story and doing your own trauma work.
- Her primary piece of advice (for therapists and clients alike) so you can receive the support you need to continue this important work.
In this workshop you will learn:
